Surrey
Street Market
Jumping
in the car and "popping" into Croydon is the traditional
approach to shopping in the borough. Modern developments
include a "quick" whirl round the supermarket.
The truth is the weekly chore of traffic
jams, struggling to get parked legally, picking your way
through the crowds, and carrying your purchases back to
the car, just to get back into that traffic. Your reward......
to pay over the odds for just about everything you're having
to buy in rip-off Britain.
There are alternatives, however, and on
this page we're going to start exploring some of the bargains
on offer in our town. We'll be using our own experience
and hopefully any pointers you can give us on value for
money deals currently available (to mail us, click the link

Surrey Street
Market - Our favourite bargain hunting ground
Yes,
if you can stand the bustle of the crowds down Surrey Street
Market, then this is the place to be. Covenient parking
can be found in the Surrey Street multi-storey car park,
and the market is just a short walk across the bridge from
level four of the car-park itself.
The quality of the produce is very high
on most of the stalls, although beware some of the "pound
the lot" bargains on offer which don't seem quite as
good value for money when you get them home. Even sticking
to the most expensive stalls, especially for vegetables
in season, you will be paying significantly less than the
any of the supermarkets.
A quick trip back to the car and it's time
to stock up on meat at Murrays Meat Market, at the top of
Surrey Street.
The full range of meat types and cuts are
available, the quality is fine, and again the prices are
coming well under the typical supermarket prices for fresh,
and even frozen equivalents. Stick around for 5-30
pm on a Saturday and get stuck in at the auction. We
estimate that as the head man starts selling off the contents
of the display cabinets you're getting another 50% for your
money. A great way of filling up the freezer!
